#DLA Culture – IT Duo Celebrate Their 15-Year and 16-Year Anniversaries, Respectively

Gary Panganiban and Adrian Lawson are part of the foundation Deutsch LA was built on. They’re our IT lifeline.

Sixteen years of answering technical questions, giving out loner computers, setting up new computers, and keeping our servers updated and running. Not a small feat for an agency office of more now almost 600 people.

They just celebrated 15 and 16 years respectively.

Each year here at Deutsch LA, an anniversary gift magically lands on your desk on your hire date. Fifteen years entitles you to a bottle of Cristal and a Crystal flip-flop plaque in our Wall of Fame trophy case. Sixteen years earns you a guitar, personalized for the employee by the agency. We now recognize these milestones by presenting 10+ anniversaries in our monthly town hall meetings.

We wanted to ask them some questions and find out what makes these IT rock stars tick.

Gary Panganiban:

Q: How many people were employed when you started?

Gary: I believe I’m employee #00003 behind Mike and Jeffrey. I was freelancing for a few months before I accepted the full-time offer. This was my first job right out of college and Deutsch had about 90 employees and only one IT person.

Q: Why the guitar? Can you give us some background on your anniversary gift?

Gary: I don’t know why the guitar. I don’t play, but it was nice getting one. I’ve always wanted to play but was too lazy to buy one. I was given a one-year online class that I will take advantage of it.

Q: What do you like most about the DLA culture?

Gary: The people are great, and it’s a fun place to work. I was one of the employees who started the Deutsch softball team back in 1999 or 2000. Also, I consider Deutsch my second family. I’ve spent a lot of good times here at Deutsch.

Q: If you weren’t here, what would you like to do?

Gary: Travel. I’ve always wanted to take a year off and go backpacking across Europe and the U.S. Also, visit my homeland, the Philippines.

Adrian Lawson:

Q: How many employees were here in 2000, and what were you hired for?

Adrian: 130 people. I was hired because Gary was doing quarterly Mitsubishi road shows. He was tasked with setting up the presentations at the dealerships. The need was there to help with server and computer setup.

Q: When did you get your first computer?

Adrian: When I left LA Gear, I got an unexpected vacation check. I bought my first computer, an IBM Clone 486 with 66 MHZ. (Yes, there was unbridled pride in that answer.)

Q: What do you consider your IT superpower?

Adrian: I’ve always loved putting things together and figuring out how things work. I’m responsible for the server and maintaining the PCs in the building.

Q: What do you like most about the DLA culture?

Adrian: I like the relaxed, informal atmosphere here. No suits and ties.

Q: If you weren’t here, what would you be doing?

Adrian: I’d still be doing IT somewhere. I discovered I enjoyed building my own furniture when we bought our home. I started with an end table and then moved on to the bed and just recently our fireplace mantle.

Thanks, gentlemen. Maybe for your 20th, DLA will give you a bejeweled computer.
