Sip. Sip. Repeat.

The Deutsch LA Wine Club is alive and sipping. Once a month, a passionate group of wine lovers gathers to share, analyze, and discuss (and drink!) wines from all over the world. In March, we drank local and enjoyed a horizontal tasting of California. (Horizontal, not as in the end result of too much wine, but rather in the viticultural sense: we tasted the same grape from the same year but from different producers in different parts of California.)

And what was the conclusion? There’s more to California than Napa. As expected, the same grape in the same year growing in Napa vs. Paso Robles vs. Lodi vs. Malibu will produce exceptionally different wine. Our state is large and diverse, which means that a Cabernet from Sonoma will display different characteristics from a Cabernet from a few hundred miles away in Monterey. This may seem obvious, but it’s in flighting these wines back to back that one can truly explore the subtle and not-so-subtle differences in provenance.

Which is what we did. Paired with cheese, chocolate, and laughter, of course. We usually keep our wines in the $10-$15 range to make them easier to compare. In April, get excited for some sparkling conversation, as we compare bubbles from around the globe. Bubble trouble. Bubble duty. Bubblicious. Bursting the bubble. (Sorry…)
