D-Prep Daily

From Fort Meyers, Florida, to New York City, Joe Kennedy has taken a huge leap up north to pursue his interest in advertising. He is a UX/UI Design intern who lives by the saying, “Move fast and break things.” Even though we’re only a few years apart, it’s always inspiring to sit down with a peer younger than me. It definitely made me want to up my game and hustle more in this industry. Take a look at my interview with our 19-year-old creative as he discusses his experience over the summer!

Tell us about your role and what account you’re working on.

I’m a graphic designer, so I’ve been doing a bunch of stuff ranging from app designs to logos! We work on a different brief each week, currently Sherwin-Williams.

Describe your day-to-day routine with D-Prep in the New York office.

The first and most important part of my day consists of getting cereal from the kitchen. I check my email when I get to my desk, and after that the team meets up and we discuss what should be done for the day. We accomplish those goals, then meet up once more to go over what’s next!

What programs do you think are necessary to master before beginning a creative internship?

It’s pretty essential to have a solid understanding of Photoshop and Illustrator. Maybe InDesign for decks.

Would you say D-Prep has challenged your creative abilities since you’ve started?

Yes! Usually on my own work I have a specific idea in mind that I elaborate on and create. D-Prep has challenged me to think about a different solution each week, so everything’s moving really fast and it can be quite stressful. It’s a really good brain exercise, though!

What is one thing you wish you had known prior to starting your internship?

I wish I had a better understanding of the process behind presenting an idea or solution to a company in a persuasive way. I’ve never worked in the ad industry, but this experience has definitely helped!

Do you have any office rituals that you have picked up since you started?

Now that summer is coming to a close and we are almost done with our internship, what was a defining moment you this summer?

Not sure if there’s a specific defining moment, but just being able to take in New York. The small food stands, parks, museums, huge buildings – it’s all pretty surreal and it will definitely be a memorable experience.

And last, but not least, have you discovered any hot spots (restaurants, bars, thrift shops, tech stores, etc.) in the city while you’ve been her?

Penn Plates! It’s right near the office and there are so many small food stands with awesome stuff. I just had this Turkish wrap thing today and it was great.
