Grand Trophies go to Leo Burnett Tailor Made, Brazil for “My Blood is Red and Black” and McCann Australia for “Dumb Ways to Die”

New York, NY – May 3, 2013: New York Festivals® announced the award winners for the 2013 International Advertising Awards® for the World’s Best Advertising® at their gala event, the New York Show, held last night at the landmark New York Public Library Stephen A. Schwarzman Building. The evening kicked off with a cocktail reception featuring the Baby Soda Jazz Band, followed by the standing-room only awards ceremony and after-party to honor the winners in true New York style.

R/GA USA earned the coveted World’s Best Idea® Award for “Nike+FuelBand” in the Integrated category for client Nike. R/GA designed the entire user experience for the FuelBand, which tracks all your activities and energy expenditures and translates them into “Fuel.” Fuelband syncs via Bluetooth to a computer or mobile phone, and the software measures calories, steps, exercise goals and performance, with all data easily uploaded to the Nike+ website. Nick Coronges, VP Technology & Strategy at R/GA, accepted the award on behalf of the agency.

"It's a great honor to be awarded the splendidly named “World's Best Idea” at the New York Festivals for the world’s best advertising. It's particularly humbling that it was awarded by such an esteemed global jury. A look at the other winners from which it was chosen reveals an impressive and eclectic body of work; from all corners of the globe. It's a wonderful time to be in our industry,” said Nick Law, EVP/Global Chief Creative Officer, R/GA.

Nike was honored with the New York Festivals 2013 Advertiser of the Year Award for their commitment to creativity and innovation. The multinational corporation headquartered in Oregon also earned 5 Gold World Medals, 3 Silver and 4 Bronze from agencies around the globe.

BBDO was awarded the prestigious title of Network of the Year, the award presented to the agency network that achieves the most awards and produces the finest caliber of work. In total, BBDO global offices earned 5 Gold World Medals, 14 Silver World Medals, 28 Bronze, and 129 Finalist Certificates. In addition, the agency was honored with both UNDPI Gold and Silver World Medals.

Leo Burnett Tailor Made, Brazil earned the Grand Trophy for “My Blood is Red and Black” in Outdoor, for client Hemoba/Esporte Clube Vitoria – Institutional. The campaign raised awareness for blood bank donations and helped combat a blood shortage. Vitoria F.C.'s football team removed the red stripes from their uniforms, changing them to white. The campaign tracked direct participation from fans through blood donations, and the team replaced each white stripe with a red stripe on the jerseys as donations increased and blood stocks rose.

“At Leo Burnett Tailor Made we deeply believe in the HumanKind Philosophy, the way of thinking that drives our agency all over the world. So, we are very proud of having brought this idea to life, an idea that moved people because it talked to their hearts. And winning the Grand Award at the prestigious New York Festivals is the cherry on top of the cake for us. We feel great and thankful for such an honor,” commented Marcelo Reis, VP creative partner LBTM.

McCann Australia was honored with the Grand Trophy for “Dumb Ways to Die”, the Public Service Announcement for Metro Trains. This animated three minute music video engaged young people by disguising a safety message inside a catchy song, while joyfully highlighting that being careless around trains is a dumb way to die.

“The Grand Award from New York Festivals has long been one of the awards you really want to win. It’s always an honour when a great jury selects your work, and we're absolutely thrilled to be selected for the Grand Award for Film. It’s also worth mentioning that it’s a rather impressive-looking trophy too, which certainly never hurts.” - John Mescall, Executive Creative Director, McCann Australia

Each year, New York Festivals, in partnership with the United Nations Department of Public Information, appoints a UN panel to select public service work that exemplifies the aims and ideals of the United Nations. The 2013 UNDPI Jury honored the following entries: BBDO Germany GmbH was awarded the Gold UNDPI Award for “Tree Concert” in Public Service Announcements | Collateral / Direct Marketing: Environmental Issues for BUND / Protection of Nature. BBDO NY received the Silver UNDPI Award for “Every Beat Matters Integrated Digital Campaign” in Public Service Announcements | Digital / Interactive Websites & Social Media: Philanthropic Appeals for client Save the Children; and DDB Argentina took home the Bronze UNDPI Award for “Chef” in Public Service Announcements | Film: Civic & Social Education for client Volkswagen.

The United States took the lead this year taking home 16 Gold World Medals, followed by France with 7, Australia 5, and Argentina and the UK with 4. Belgium, Brazil and Germany tied with 3 Golds, and Malaysia earned 2 Gold World Medals. In addition, the Czech Republic, Egypt and New Zealand each received 1 Gold World Medal.
For the second time since its launch last year, over 220 young professionals from the European Association of Communications Agencies (EACA) member agencies across Europe, Middle East and Africa had the chance to obtain the European Advertising Certificate (EAC), a foundation-level qualification for adlanders with up to two year’s industry experience.
The young professionals from over 35 nations completed a 25-30 hours online learning programme providing a thorough understanding of the advertising industry and its processes. This is then followed by a three-hour written examination organised by the EACA together with its national advertising associations. The exam will take place simultaneously on 18 April 2013 all over Europe, Middle East and Africa.
"I am very pleased that today’s junior agency practitioners are keen and willing to be well prepared for the everyday challenges the industry presents them with. With the EAC qualification we give them the right tool to take these opportunities based on their better understanding of the entire brand communications process" said Dominic Lyle, Director General, EACA. "EAC – where education meets business! Better trained people means better business – and this is one of our objectives here at the EACA”.
For more information, visit: www.eaca.eu/certificate

Cannes Lions Copies New York Festivals Two-Tier Jury and Patent Pending Matrix Scoring System

New York, NY – March 28, 2013: The Cannes Lions advertising awards announced today that they are changing their judging system after what Advertising Age described as “Last Year’s Media-Judging Scandal” with “widespread accusations of cheating.” Now Cannes Lions has copied the New York Festivals’ four-year old judging system whereby a large jury selects the shortlist and then a jury of 30 senior judges selects the trophy winners using a new scoring system.

“It’s unfortunate an organization as large and successful as the Cannes Lions cannot improve their judging system without copying our innovations and risking another scandal and lawsuit. We created the two-tier judging system four years ago and now have a patent pending on our revolutionary matrix scoring system to protect our intellectual property from being copied by others. Both of our systems are widely heralded by the international advertising community as being revolutionary and the best judging system in the industry.” said Jim Smyth, CEO of the International Awards Group, LLC (“IAG”), which owns the New York Festivals International Advertising Awards, for the World’s Best Advertising® as well as five other international award competitions.

“As owners and organizers of award competitions it is our responsibility to create and maintain an honest and effective judging system. It is not the entrant’s responsibility. Years ago IAG designed a bulletproof system to prevent cheating because jury members are locked-out from scoring work from their own agency and or network. This preventive measure clearly demonstrates to the international advertising community, that we are the global leaders when it comes to organizing and running clean and successful award competitions, one they can truly trust.”

“Furthermore, the 370+ members on the New York Festivals Grand Jury combined with the 30+ CCO members on the Executive Jury continues to be the largest advertising jury ever assembled and combined they cast more than 330,000 votes each year in selecting the winners, an unprecedented number of votes in the annals of advertising award competitions. Our market share has grown significantly because of our innovations, which is causing shifts and reactions in the awards industry. That’s what we do, innovate. And when called upon, litigate to protect our valuable assets,” said Smyth.

This is not the first dispute between IAG and Cannes Lions. Smyth said that IAG has been engaged in an on-going dispute in Asia with Haymarket and Cannes Lions related to claims of trademark infringement regarding IAG’s AME Awards, for Advertising & Marketing Effectiveness competition, which was launched throughout the world in 1994. Haymarket now joined by Cannes, claim their Asian Marketing Effectiveness Awards, also known as AME Awards in Asia, was launched in a few Asian countries around 2002 and they have been trying to bar IAG’s use of the acronym AME in Asia. However, Haymarket and Cannes have since changed the name of their competition to Festival of Asian Marketing Effectiveness and are no longer using the acronym AME.

DDB Canada, Vancouver and PHD China Awarded AME Regional Platinum Awards; AME Green Award Goes to Heimat Werbeagentur GmbH, Germany

New York, NY – March 20, 2013: The International AME Awards® for the World’s Best Advertising and Marketing Effectiveness™ announced the 2013 competition award winners. The Grand Jury presented the prestigious AME Grand Award and Regional Platinum Award/Europe to DDB Tribal Germany. DDB Canada, Vancouver/North America and PHD China/Asia-Pacific also earned AME Regional Platinum Awards.

The 2013 AME Grand Jury awarded 17 Gold AME Awards, 20 Silver, and 23 Bronze Awards to entries received from 27 countries worldwide. Celebrity-focused brand interaction was a huge trend, with campaigns employing actual celebrities or creating contests where the consumer or their ideas would be the star. Entries submitted into newly launched categories, including Social Benefit, Branded Entertainment, and Use of Discipline/Low-Budget also scored Gold Awards for multiple campaigns.

DDB Tribal Germany was honored with the AME Grand Award and AME Regional Platinum Award/Europe for “Don’t Make Up and Drive,” for client Volkswagen AG. The campaign exposed women to the danger of applying make-up while driving by partnering with online make-up star, Nikkie, whose tutorial is interrupted by a crash delivering an impactful, life-saving message. The campaign mobilized community support to persuade women that life’s not worth risking, even for the most beautiful make-up, scoring 2 Gold AME Awards, as well as 1,364,000 views, thousands of re-tweets, blog posts, and world-wide PR.

“We are as happy as we are proud to achieve the highest recognition for “Don´t Make Up and Drive” not only at the most important creative shows but also at the most prestigious shows that judge effectiveness,” said Eric Schoeffler, Chief Creative Officer, DDB Tribal, Germany. “We are grateful to have the creative talent and a client that really motivates us to explore new forms of creativity. The AME means a lot to us.”

The AME Grand Jury awarded two global agencies the AME Regional Platinum Award: DDB Canada, Vancouver received the Platinum AME Award/North America for “Canada. Keep Exploring” created for the Canadian Tourism Commission. The campaign employed consumer participation and leveraged the power of peer-to-peer influence by presenting real journeys documented by fellow travelers. The marketing effort shifted perceptions amongst international travelers propelling Canada to the #1 country brand two years in a row, and reversed the decline in international visitation to Canada. The campaign also earned an AME Gold and Silver Award.

“If you think the work's good, wait until you see the country,” said Cosmo Campbell, Creative Director, DDB Canada, Vancouver.

PHD China earned the Platinum AME Award/Asia-Pacific for “Dive Into Love” for Cornetto. The campaign targeted young lovers in China, and was designed to help Chinese teens and young adults navigate modern love. The campaign employed a series of four 12 minute films focused on different aspects of love with Cornetto ice cream as the star, using product placement and branding woven into the story lines. The results: Cornetto doubled their sales over a two year period, and the medium launch generated a total of 320 million video views, and over 2.8 million posts on Sina Weibo.

“I think it demonstrates the power of a great idea, well executed, that allowed us to build a meaningful connection between our brand and our target customers, ultimately delivering fantastic business results,” said Mark Heap, CEO, PHD China.

Heimat Werbeagentur GmbH, Germany was honored with the 2013 AME Green Award for “CNN Ecosphere”. CNN International created an interactive digital ecosystem based on Twitter where politically and environmentally active opinion leaders around the globe could take part in a worldwide debate on climate change during COP17. The motto: “Plant a thought, watch it grow”. Every Tweet containing #COP17 was added to a visualized discussion on the ECOSPHERE micro site and became part of a worldwide debate on climate change. CNN ECOSPHERE gathered more than 227,000 tweets, generating more than 6.7 million unique media impressions around the globe. “CNN Ecosphere” also scored 2 AME Gold and 2 Silver Awards.

“Instead of bringing the Climate Change Conference to the world we brought the world to the Conference - with the power of a hashtag,” commented Myles Lord, Creative Managing Director for Heimat Berlin.

This year, celebrity-focused campaign themes scored high. DDB Hong Kong “McDonald’s Chinese New Year McGreeting” featuring comedic duo Soft Hard earned 2 Gold AME Awards and 3 Silver; DDB Chicago’s “GED Pep Talk Center” for the Ad Council, featuring celebrities such as Christopher Lloyd and Terry Crews, was honored with 3 Silver AME Awards; and Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO’s “Going from Good to Great” for PepsiCo/Walkers, starring British comics Stephen Fry and Jimmy Carr, received a Silver AME.

The NDS features the very best new directing talent, identified through our global network of agencies around the world, and through our relationships with key Internet sites. Hundreds of submissions are viewed by the Saatchi & Saatchi Worldwide Creative Board who make the final selection. Last year, 18 directors made the cut.

Open to directors of all film formats and styles, the NDS is free to enter, and the lucky few who are chosen for the 2013 showreel will have their film shown at the NDS on Thursday 20th June in The Grand Auditorium in Cannes. The NDS is one of the most popular events at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, which in 2013 celebrates its 60th year as the key event in the calendar of the international advertising and creative community.

If you think your work might make the cut, or you know a super talented director whose work you think merits consideration for the 2013 reel, you can submit work to the Saatchi & Saatchi contact in your region. Deadline for entries is Monday 15th April 2013.

Full list of contacts, eligibility and details on how to enter can be found here:
http://www.saatchi.com/new_directors_showcase/how_to_enter

The call for entries for the Young Director Award is now officially open. We are looking for the sharpest and the smartest new directors.
We all know the importance of getting a new director’s work in front of those who count so entering the YDA is the best way to kick start your film-making career.
YDA has a huge audience hungry to view the latest and most talented new directors’ work.
All work entered gets seen by a vast panel of international judges made up from CFPE’s producer members and associated industry friends.
The shortlisted work is then viewed and voted on by a group of production leaders in Cannes who select the finalists just days before the YDA.
It’s our 15th birthday and we intend to celebrate in style. Following the disappointment of the hundreds who couldn’t get into our venue last year we have taken over the massive Palais Stephanie auditorium (Mariott theatre) where the finalists work will be shown and winners
announced.
Aspiring directors can now submit their entries in the following categories which are divided into two sections, European and Non-European:
• Broadcast

• Film school

• Test commercial

• Music video

• Web film

• Animation

• Branded short film

• Video Art
One of the rules is that films entered must be among the first four commercials ever made by the director the year before the award.
Entries will be accepted until Friday April 19th 2013 so submit your work now

For further information about YDA please contact:

New York, NY – February 13, 2013: The AME Awards® for The World's Best Advertising & Marketing Effectiveness™ has announced the Shortlist for the 2013 competition. The Grand Jury of interactive and multidisciplinary marketers, planners, and creatives selected the Shortlist from entries submitted from 27 countries worldwide.

Two categories newly launched in 2013, Social Benefit and Branded Entertainment, exhibited an uptick in entries achieving Shortlist status with brands including CNN International, Volkswagen, DuPont, Intel, Bench, and Cornetto. Trends dominating the Shortlist include a robust number of entries employing celebrity interaction, interactive consumer participation, contests, green-themed, and cause marketing. The case briefs also showed trends in advocacy-led strategy, brand reinvention, and public responsibility.

“The big theme this year seemed to be 'celebrity'—whether that meant employing actual celebrities in a campaign or creating a contest where the consumers or their ideas would be the star,” said Alisun Armstrong, Executive Director, AME Awards. “It's an interesting shift from the community-building focus that prevailed in last year's competition, and just goes to show how a single trend can be translated into effective campaigns for an incredibly diverse field of brands.”

Celebrity-focused campaigns propelled multiple entries to the medal round: DDB Chicago “GED Pep Talk Center” for the Ad Council featured celebrities ranging from Christopher Lloyd to Terry Crewes; Metro International’s “Global Guest Editors” included Lady Gaga, Karl Lagerfeld, and Sir Richard Branson; DDB Hong Kong’s “Chinese New Year Campaign: Sharing the Blessings with One and All” for McDonald’s featured comedic duo Soft Hard. Other shortlisted entries with famous faces: TBWA\Santiago Mangada Puno’s “Benchingko/Films” for Bench starring Piolo Pascual and Coco Martin; OMD USA’s “Intel IdeaJam” with Ashton Kutcher; and Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO’s “Going from Good to Great” with British comics Stephen Fry and Jimmy Carr.

Strategic interactive consumer participation initiatives achieved stellar results for the following Shortlisted entries: Grey Worldwide GmbH “Breathe Happy” for Febreze; Heimat Werbeagentur GmbH Germany “CNN Ecosphere”; DDB Canada/Vancouver “Canada. Keep Exploring” for the Canadian Tourism Commission; DDB “Bleachable Moments” for Clorox Liquid Bleach; OMD Hong Kong “Wyeth Learning Surprise Video Library”; Spectacolor “Dunk Tank”; and Spinn Action Marketing Sweden “Is it a Chocolatewaferchocolate or a Waferchocolatechocolate?” for Kexchoklad.

Contest marketing helped gain brand awareness and provided a fast track to the medalist round: Fred & Farid Paris “Kisser Casting” for Martini; DDB Canada/Vancouver “‘Pass the Present’ Facebook Promotion,” for Best Buy Canada; and Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO UK with both “Going from Good to Great” for Pepsico and “Escape the Map” for client Mercedes Benz.

Entries in the Social Benefit categories concentrated on brand initiatives that contributed to the greater good including Green-themed “The Donation Army” by Ogilvy Germany for OroVerde Rainforest Foundation; Heimat Werbeagentur GmbH’s “CNN Ecosphere”; and TBWA\Santiago Mangada Puno’s campaign “KNOxOUT Project: EDSA” for Boysen Knoxout.

Germany saw 32 entries with Shortlist status with campaigns based in social media: DDB Tribal Group GmbH “Don´t Make Up and Drive,” for client Volkswagen; Serviceplan Gruppe GmbH & Co. kg “Internité pour Chalampé. A French village wants to become German.” for client Kabel BW GmbH; and Heimat Berlin took fan rivalry to the next level with “Go All in for Your Team. Make Your Choice” for client Adidas.

The United States was recognized with 15 Shortlisted entries; the Philippines with 9; Hong Kong 7; England 5; Canada, and France each with 4; China and Sweden each with 2; and Denmark, Egypt, Japan, Malaysia, and UAE were each recognized with 1.
King James Cape Town Earn Grand Midas for Santam Insurance

New York, NY – December 20, 2012: The Midas Awards®, for the World’s Best Financial Advertising™, announced the award winners for the 2012 competition. This year’s Midas Grand Jury awarded one Grand Midas, 26 Gold Ingots, 46 Silver Ingots, and 63 Finalists. The 2012 Midas Awards competition received entries from 28 countries and is the only international competition that recognizes excellence in financial services communications on a global scale.

King James Cape Town earned the coveted Grand Midas Trophy in Investment Advisors for “Back at Ya” for their client Santam Insurance. In 2012, Santam launched an ad featuring Sir Ben Kingsley. Nando´s Fast Food Chicken produced a parody of the ad, which immediately became a massive viral hit. Santam responded within days of Nando’s parody with their own award-winning spoof, challenging the fast-food chain to deliver a party sized dinner order to the Johannesburg Children’s Home with a 4pm Thursday deadline. Exposure for the Santam brand resulted in “Back at Ya” becoming the most viewed South Africa video on YouTube in the 2 days after going viral. It also topped the most mentions on Twitter on the day of launch, trended after the first hour, and remained there until Nandos delivered on the challenge. Satam’s page takeover on News24 – resulted in 940,696 impressions and 11,440 clicks generating a CTR (Click-Through-Rate) of 1.2% - the CTR benchmark in SA is 0.25%.

“I'm on record for often saying that our goal as an agency is to create the best work in the category for our clients. I obviously had our own market in mind, so winning this award is spectacular overkill. We are thrilled. I know our client will also be. Kudos must go to Santam for this. Our response to Nando's was one of those spontaneous bolts of creative lightening that are so easily passed over because they don't fit a media schedule or a broader strategic purpose. This client put a good idea ahead of all other factors and that is rare these days.” Alistair King - Creative Partner, King James Cape Town.

King James Cape Town was honored with 2 additional Gold Ingots for Santam Insurance; “Back at Ya” received the Gold Ingot in Television Commercial, and “Sir Sneaky” for Financial Planning.
