Story In order to raise awareness on Violence Against Women (VAW) and to call for an end to all forms of violence against women and girls, UNRIC invited everyone with creative ideas, including students, professionals in the field and interested members of the general public to create a print advertisement on VAW. The competition was realized in partnership with UN Women and is part of the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon’s UNiTE to End Violence Against Women campaign.
Philosophy The aim of the competition was to increase awareness of a problem that affects one out of every three women worldwide. The winning ads were published in several European newspapers at the conclusion of the competition on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. The advertisement were also used as a public service announcement to be published in any major European print media and also for exhibitions and other outlets. It aimed at raising awareness about VAW towards the general public and mobilizing citizens to put pressure on political leaders to end all forms of VAW.
In order to inform, but also engage, the European public in the work of the United Nations, we decided, since 2007, to launch an annual European public information campaign choosing the most relevant theme for our European audience from the UN’s priorities for that year, but also taking into account the priorities of our governmental, institutional and civil society partners. The birth of UN-Women in 2011 was the perfect opportunity for UNRIC to show its support by launching a second Ad Competition and fourth public information campaign - Create4theUN: Say No to Violence Against Women 2011. We joined forces with UN-Women and European media partners and asked creative Europeans to think of ads with the theme “Say No to Violence Against Women.”
