About me

Petty comes to Spy Post with experience in editing commercials, web campaigns and independent films. One of his first national campaigns came in 2003 as a 10-spot comedy package for FOX sports with TBWA\Chiat\Day, shot by Kinka Usher. Since then he has lent his talent to ad campaigns for Scion via ATTIK, Jeep through Cutwater, Hilton with Foote, Cone & Belding, and Sprint and Comcast for Goodby, Silverstein & Partners. He also worked on a series of web films for Nike via AKQA, as well as two original half-hour films, which were sponsored by Adidas and created by TBWA\Chiat\Day to raise the profile of Major League Soccer in the US.

Having studied audio recording as an undergrad, Petty likes to be involved in the sound design of each project. He has sound designed spots that he has cut, including Jeep, Comcast and Nike, and has also lent his talents to spots he did not edit for clients such as Emerald Nuts, 24 Hour Fitness, and GameTap, including the award-winning ?Pac-Man? spot. ?My audio recording and music background has influenced my editorial craft tremendously,? Petty explains. ?For starters, when cutting short-format projects, pacing is everything, so having an inherent sense of rhythm is essential. But also from a storytelling perspective, sound design can be the defining element to a successful spot, and I really love watching a scene change and deepen when the right sound bed is built.?

Petty continues, ?You learn early on that it?s not just the editors job to cut the boards - the boards and script are a starting place, but a really great edit is discovered, not planned. Working side-by-side with all the other artists at Spy Post will enable us to explore our projects even more and take our ideas even further.?
