Matthew Bull

Executive Creative Director at MullenLowe South Africa

About me

Matthew Bull was born with a large spoon in his hand. If something's still he likes to stir it. This has been evident throughout his career, which began as a copywriter at South Africa's leading agency Hunt Lascaris TBWA in 1990. In July 1996 he started his own agency Lowe Bull which has grown to be the country's eighth largest but, more importantly, is now the second ranked creative agency in South Africa.

But things were going far too well for his liking, so, on July 1, 2003 he accepted the opportunity to run Lowe London, an agency with unquestionable class, but questionable form. Since then he has spent a lot of time scratching his head with his large spoon.

He has been inspired by British advertising ever since his Mum, a TV producer in South Africa, started bringing back reels in the early 80's and very much hopes to be a part of creating British work that finds itself on a reel of that nature, so he can take it home and show his own kids. Not to mention his mum.

Oh, and he thinks research companies and their advertising research formulas are strangling creativity and our ability to entertain, invigorate and persuade consumers. Spoon please.

Matthew has an infectious ability to create the conditions for wonderful work to flourish both as a leader and as a practitioner, it's this enormous talent that lead to Matthew being promoted to Worldwide Chief Creative Officer in January 2005.
