Story In anticipation of Cirque du Soleil’s newest play based on Mexico’s vibrant culture, LAPIZ created an augmented reality mobile app that will interact with a print ad in Cirque programs around the world. Spectators can download the “Mexico Fantasy” app on Android and iOS devices to bring to life the characters and environment seen in the program. “Innovation juxtaposed with tradition became a compelling, symbolic way to portray the richness of Mexico’s diverse culture,” said Ia Murad, creative director at LAPIZ. The ad features characters drawn from Mexican traditions, including Alebrijes, fantastic animals that are a combination of two species (such as a donkey with butterfly wings, a rooster with bull horns or a lion with an eagle head), and Catrinas, the iconic skeletons seen in Day of the Dead celebrations. Flamboyant Paradise Studios illustrated the characters in 3D in a colorful set of pyramids, oceans and cities from both ancient and modern landmarks. In the same Mexico Fantasy app, visitors can add Alebrije masks to their selfies to share in social media or plan their next vacation to Mexico.
