Story In these humorous, irreverent ads, office workers interact and refer to each other by names which provide their math educational pedigree and background. The more senior and well paid executives have obviously studied math throughout high school and college while the more junior, administrative staff stopped taking math classes much earlier in high school.
Philosophy NACME (the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering) has provided leadership and support for the national effort to increase the representation of successful African American, American Indian and Latino women and men in engineering and technology, math- and science-based careers. By showing the hierarchical work structure we were able to visually show how having this level of knowledge and learning is key to having more options in life: better jobs, better housing and a better life.
Problem Only 15% of all American students and 6% of minority students graduate from high school with the four year sequence of math and science courses needed to begin a science-based course of study in college. This can significantly limit their college cirriculum and long term career options. We needed to inspire and convince students to continue studying math and science throughout high school, instead of opting out.
