Lecturer & graduate go head-to-head at cinematography awards

A senior UCA lecturer from our Film School in Farnham will be sharing the stage with one of her former students after they were both nominated for the inaugural Jules Wright Award for Female Creative Technicians. Noski Deville, who teaches Cinematography, has been shortlisted alongside 2002 UCA graduate Suzie Lavelle for the award, with the winner due to be announced as the prestigious Jarman Award winner on 30 November.

The new award, which has been set up by Film London and the Wapping Project, aims to recognise women working in the field of artist filmmaking, and to highlight the technical, craft-based roles that are indispensable yet often overlooked in the industry. A prize of £5,000 – funded by the Women’s Playhouse Trust – will be awarded to the winning nominee.

Noski, who has previously worked alongside the likes of directors Steve McQueen and Isaac Julien, says: “There are relatively few female cinematographers and there are still barriers to be broken down before more women will be accepted into the field, so I'm particularly pleased that this award aims to recognise female talent within the technical, creative arts.”

UCA Film alumna Suzie Lavelle – whose professional credits include Sherlock and Dr Who – has also been nominated. “I have worked with Suzie both as an aspiring student cinematographer and as a professional crew member assisting on shoots for me," says her former lecturer Noski. "As her career developed, I recommended her to artists as a cinematographer in her own right and I am therefore very proud that we have both been shortlisted for the award.”

Our Film School in Farnham is widely recognised within the industry as being a fertile breeding ground for creative film makers who excel in the technical aspects of filmmaking, with Film course graduates nominated for BAFTAs in 2014 and 2015. You can find out more about our Film courses here.
