This White Paper will help readers understand more about Gifting in China, particularly for modern HNWIs, and help you find potential opportunities to grow your business.

The Hurun Research Institute in association with MEC cooperated over six months from December 2016 to May 2017 to research and complete ‘China HNWI Gifting White Paper, surveyed 507 of China’s most successful HNWIs. With the vast scale of this market in mind, Hurun Report and MEC research encompassed 14 cities in mainland Cina, with 507 HNWIs filling in surveys of their gifting behaviour. Their age averaged 41 years, their wealth amounted to 22 million RMB per capita, and they have 4.17 million RMB of disposable income annually. A further 16 wealthy invidivuals were interviewed by our teams based in Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou and Xi'an.

Chinese people celebrate all kind of festivals throughout the year. As a result, many brands constantly launch topical marketing campaigns and package their products and services with gifting concepts. Brands need to consoider various giftees’ roles, gifting occasions, emotional needs and gifting motivations; such as expressing filial piety, expressing love and care, create surprises and special memories, or sending blessing. Brands need to grasp various marketing opportunities throughout the year. When planning different festivals or themed marketing promotions, brands also need to offer new news to sustain popularity in the gifting market. At the same time, brands can drive day-to-day casual gifting occasions by focusing on lifestyle.

White paper reveals that “family” are the most common “giftees”, with 98% of HNWIs sending them gifts. Interestingly, 67% HNWIs have given themselves gifts last year. This is more common among females (74%, index 110). “Gifting to me” fits in with the popular concepts like “little but certain happiness”, “a sense of ceremony”, and “love and pamper myself”. Rather than simply buying something, making it a ‘gift to me” brings greater joy and satisfaction. Brands can leverage this mentality of consumers, especially for busy HNWIs, to enhance their emotional connection with the brand.

When choosing a gift, HNWIs always consider product itself, brand and price. In term of product, “good quality and craftsmanship” (87%), “practicality” (85%), “uniqueness” (77%) and “attractive packaging”(74%) are considered to be the most important factors. When it comes to brand, important factors include ‘high-end, to gain ‘Mianzi’(90%), “well-known brand”(83%) and whether brand fits with giftee’s self-image”(80%); and with regards to the price, whether the “price meet giftee’s expectations”(61%) is the main consideration for ‘gifters’.

Compared to Tire 1 cities, Tier 2 show more positive attitude. Chinese New Year, birthdays, Mid-Autumn Festivals and anniversaries show highiest gifting rate. Different genders and age group of HNWIs show difference in gift preferences: male tend to gift more jewelry, flowers and handbags; females tend to gift more watches, personal care devices and mobile tablets; young people under 35 years old gift more diverse fashionale products such as accessories, skin care, perfume, cosmetics, SPA beauty, Sports card, ect. With HNWIs paying more and more attention to managing their health, almost 90% of the respondents pointed out that “healthcare products” are the most selected gifts for them. Appetite for luxury products is increasing, 60% of respondents sent luxury items as gifts more frequently compared with the last three years, with 18% doing so considerably more than before.

27% of HNWIs encounter difficulties when gifting. The top 3 most troublesome aspects are “unclear about giftees’ needs or preferences”(57%), “time and effort spent in selecting gifts”(50%) and “Giftees’ are hard to impress”(49%). Females “enjoy the process”, while males “take shortcuts” in gift selection. Brands need to engage females with more involvement in gift selections, to deliver a more satisfying experience along the way, and guide males to make efficient purchases.

In addition, brands need to understand the roles of different purchase channels, so as to leverage their influence in marketing, and to create effient and pleasant shopping experiences across all channels. With regards to domestic purchasing channels, 97% of HNWIs have brought gifts in brick-and-mortar shops. Among them, “domestic brand stores, counters”(76%), “domestic department stores, shopping centers” (68%) and “through friends” (58%) are the most common purchasing channels. 74% of HNWIs have purchased gifts overseas. 69% of HNWIs have shopped for gifts online.

Rupert Hoogewerf, Chairman and Chief Researcher of Hurun Report said: “Very glad to be with MEC to publish ‘China HNWIs Gifting White Paper’. This is the first in-depth analysis of high net worth people gifts behavior of the report, hope this can have a trend of guiding significance to report to high net worth population provide valuable information with respect to the gift, and expects to provide reference to the brand positioning and product adjustment."

Gordon Domlija, CEO of MEC said:”Very happy to cocreate this report with Hurun Report, the leading reaserach house which fosuses on China HNWIs.This report’s point of view is rooted in a profound understanding of Chinese culture and social background, and we analyse how it impacts consumers’ gifting needs and behaviour. Through our proprietary research and planning approach, MEC Momentum, we identified what really matters to HNWIs in terms of gifting at the critical stages of their decision making journey. This deep analysis reveals the value of understanding this topic from multiple and critical dimensions, and what opportunities it brings.”

IKEA AND MEC WAVEMAKER PARTNER WITH SUPERFRUIT’S MITCH GRASSI AND SCOTT HOYING ON LIVE ACTION SNAPCHAT VIDEO EXPERIENCE https://www.adforum.com/agency/3906/press-releases/65518/ikea-and-mec-wavemaker-partner-with-superfruits-mitch-grassi-and-scott-hoying-on-live-action-snapchat-video-experience https://www.adforum.com/agency/3906/press-releases/65518/ikea-and-mec-wavemaker-partner-with-superfruits-mitch-grassi-and-scott-hoying-on-live-action-snapchat-video-experience IKEA U.S. and MEC Wavemaker, MEC’s content division, have partnered with pop duo Superfruit’s Mitch Grassi and Scott Hoying to launch a first-to-market interactive Snapchat video experience for ‘Back to College’ season. This immersive ad unit combines the power of influencers, as well as thoughtful storytelling, to create a captivating experience on the platform with the most use among 18- to 24-year-olds.

Tapping into the broad influencer bench of Fullscreen Media, MEC Wavemaker partnered IKEA with music and comedy duo Mitch Grassi and Scott Hoying (real-life roommates) on authentic, entertaining content that brings to life IKEA’s Back-to-College styles. Leveraging Eko’s interactive storytelling technology, IKEA and MEC Wavemaker transformed a linear video activation into an immersive, personalized adventure enabling viewers to follow the influencer of their choice, controlling and impacting the outcome with the tap of a button. In this customizable experience, viewers take an active role in how the story takes shape, offering insight into user preferences and capturing the essence of IKEA’s broad range of styles.

Commenting on the campaign, Kendra Ferguson, IKEA Media Project Manager, said, “We curated seven different style collections for our Back to College campaign. Through interactive video, wefeatured two of those styles in an engaging way, and hope to gain insights about what appeals to our consumers through the choices they made.”

The ‘Back to College’ season is an important time for IKEA; however, with media consumption among younger generations in flux, it has become increasingly difficult to engage with student audiences. The declining ability for traditional paid channels to communicate IKEA’s broad range and style meant that a new, re-envisioned media strategy was required to engage students obsessed with self-expression.

Noah Mallin, Head of Social, MEC Wavemaker added, “We seek to do more than earn consumer attention for our clients—we are in the business of inspiring people through content, gaining attention through experiences and winning consumers through voluntary engagement. That is what this campaign is all about: immersive connections through the intertwining of data, technology and content.”

The Snapchat experience will run until the end of August and be amplified across social and display channels.

The Cannes Lions winning submission focused on leveraging M Live for its ongoing campaign with the goal of elevating guest experiences while creating lasting and meaningful travel memories. With the help of HYP3R, a Silicon Valley tech start-up specializing in geo-fencing publicly available social conversations, M Live and its Digital Content Producers analyze hundreds of publically available social posts every hour across Marriott’s more than 6,100 properties. M Live filters those geo-tagged social posts on Instagram, Twitter, and Weibo into a proprietary UI and gleans those insights to provide surprise and delight moments that are pinpointed and customized to It elicit emotive social responses. MEC then helps Marriott to amplify those targeted social posts.

Through this always-on approach, M Live is not only able to discover moments and engage with customers quickly, but also able to identify opportunities that are distinct for each of Marriott’s brands in locations around the globe. An example of such success involved a couple posting about their engagement at the Gaylord Opryland in Nashville on social media. M Live quickly flagged the post via HYP3R, engaging the Gaylord brand and property teams to celebrate the couple with a champagne toast. The result was original content posted by the couple thanking the property for their hospitality.

“We are thrilled to be recognized by Cannes Lions with this cutting edge award that highlights the intersection of creativity and data,” said Karin Timpone, Global Marketing Officer, Marriott International. “I want to congratulate Matthew Glick, Senior Director of Global Creative + Content Marketing, for his amazing leadership in this arena, and celebrate his team at our M Live in Bethesda, MD, as well as all of those working in our global M Live centers around the world, for all of their innovative and award-winning work.”

“M Live has been groundbreaking in its ability to bring media and creative together to elevate the quality and relevancy of the content we produce on behalf of Marriott’s portfolio of brands,” added Carl Fremont, Global Chief Digital Officer, MEC. “Leveraging M Live to turn insight into strategy, we are fueling the creative thinking needed to connect on an emotional level with consumers at key points in their purchase journey – whether or not the content is directly mentioning Marriott. We are thrilled for this work to be recognized at the Cannes and value our partnership with Karin and her team.”

‘Pocket Dentist,’a mobile ring-back service providing dental care information access in rural India received multiple honors at the India Digital Media Awards (IDMA). Launched by Colgate-Palmolive and Red Fuse Communications, and backed by the Indian Dental Association, ‘Pocket Dentist’ detects multiple dialects and responds to the 30 most common oral health questions to address 91% of rural dwellers’ oral health problems. ‘Pocket Dentist’ is proof of Colgate’s commitment that a healthy smile is the right of every Indian.

‘Pocket Dentist’ is live in two provinces of rural India, providing over six million people individualized professional dental advice for the first time. The program was developed due to the limited access to dentists in the region and the fact that up to 70% of rural India is ‘media dark.’ While smartphones and data plans are rare in more remote areas, over 80% of rural households have access to basic mobile phones without data. The ‘Pocket Dentist’ is publicized using mobile voice ads, hand-painted outdoor murals, and word of mouth from health workers. Villagers access 'Pocket Dentist' with a free of charge missed call from basic mobile, without data charges and receive a no-cost call-back in their dialect within minutes.

Watch the ‘Pocket Dentist’ video here.

“Colgate believes that ‘Everyone deserves a future they can smile about.’ We believe this program is life changing for people in rural India and we are committed to expanding it to more markets and impacting more people worldwide,” said Colgate-Palmolive’s CMO, Mukul Deoras.

The brand innovation space is at a pivotal point, as innovation has yet to deliver returns that brands are satisfied with and the number of start-ups continues to soar. In addition, the fundamental differences in the way brands and start-ups operate has led to strained relationships between the two parties.

Tonic is looking to buck this trend with a fresh strategy in its second year, to concentrate on specific innovation ventures or projects and much deeper relationships with fewer start-ups, to help them grow alongside MEC clients.

Salter joins MEC Tonic, which was launched in November 2015 to help clients work with start-ups and early stage companies to use emerging technology to accelerate people around the purchase journey.

Working across MEC Tonic’s entire client base, Salter reports to Ben Poole, MEC UK’s Chief Digital Officer, and will focus on redefining what innovation means for MEC and its clients.

Most recently the Chief Marketing Officer at Vrumi, a start-up disrupting the traditional workplace, Salter has built a successful career in product and service innovation.

Prior to Vrumi, Salter worked in New York as Head of Marketing at Q by Equinox (now Furthermore) and Senior Communications Manager at Equinox, where she led media strategy, digital marketing, and agency performance.

Starting her career at Procter & Gamble working on Clairol, Salter also spent seven years at Casio where she launched new brands, drove brand growth, and delivered innovation and strategy to bring the G-Shock and Baby-G products back into popular culture.

Ben Poole said: “Sarah has a superb track record of successfully innovating for brands, and will doubtless bring value to our clients. This combination will bring significant value and insight into helping brands work with the right start-ups on the right projects. Sarah is perfectly placed to take Tonic to the next phase of its evolution.”

Sarah Salter said: “For too long innovation has been used to drive short term relevance but it isn't about this or a quick sales uplift, it's about building a future. This strategy is what is so exciting about MEC Tonic for someone with my background. I’m excited to be joining at such a pivotal time in Tonic’s growth.”

MEC to unveil the ‘Face of Advertising’ at Ad Week Europe https://www.adforum.com/agency/3906/press-releases/64135/mec-to-unveil-the-face-of-advertising-at-ad-week-europe https://www.adforum.com/agency/3906/press-releases/64135/mec-to-unveil-the-face-of-advertising-at-ad-week-europe MEC will reveal the ‘Face of Advertising’ at Ad Week Europe 2017. Photos of attendees will be combined via bespoke facial merging tools to create a real-time data visualisation of what people working in the industry today look like.

The merged ‘face’ will be on display at the Ad Week Europe 2017 venue at Picturehouse Central in Piccadilly on day one of the event on Monday 20th March. The image of the face will be updated and altered in real time as the images of different attendees’ faces are captured.

MEC is also challenging Ad Week delegates to brave their bias and take part in up to six Harvard University Implicit Association Tests (IATs) each, which are designed to help bring unconscious biases to the surface. The tests measure hidden attitudes and beliefs that people may be unwilling or unable to admit to - or even aware of.

Attendees can take part anonymously and will be tested on their attitudes towards the likes of gender, disability, sexuality, weight, age and race.
The focus of the result is not on an individual’s ‘score’, but rather on encouraging individuals to look and reflect on the presence and breadth of their biases.

Each IAT test takes around 10 minutes to complete, and involves answering a set of multiple choice questions on the topic of your choice. There's then a quick fire test where you have to push keys as quickly as possible to answer each question which is how your unconscious bias is uncovered. Results are revealed as soon as you've submitted your answers.

The aim of MEC’s Brave Your Bias test, which takes place in the foyer of Picturehouse Central on day one of Ad Week Europe, is to encourage delegates to help drive change and challenge the face of advertising by confronting their own biases and pledging to work on them.

Diversity Consultant Sasha Scott from The Inclusive Group will be on hand to offer coaching and top tips for those looking for tailored advice on how to address their bias.

To help create the ‘Face of Advertising’, Ad Week attendees are invited to visit MEC’s Brave Your Bias photo booth, situated at the entrance to Picturehouse Central and get their picture taken. A bespoke facial merging tool will then be used to create the composite face.

Sarah Homer, People & Culture Director, MEC EMEA said: “We are looking to build a truly inclusive culture in MEC, where every unique person has a voice. Tackling unconscious bias is going to drive inclusion and unlock greater collaboration and creativity in all the work we do. We all have inbuilt prejudices from our backgrounds and upbringings, but becoming aware of them is the first step to ‘owning’ them, and getting advice from a specialist coach can help us do this.”

Jason Dormieux, CEO of MEC UK, said: “As an industry we lag behind many others when it comes to diversity. Whilst inclusivity is a major focus for our industry, we need to move from intention to action as we seek to better reflect the UK’s diverse society. By tackling people’s unconscious bias we can actively support individuals to encourage greater inclusivity in our workforce.”

MEC will also present a panel discussion at Ad Week on The Future of Media’ on Monday, March 20th at 5pm at the IPA Centenary Stage. The panel will include industry experts Simon Daglish, Deputy Managing Director Commercial, ITV; Ella Dolphin, CEO, Shortlist Media; Jon O’Donnell, MD Commercial, ESI Media; and Helen Weisinger, Chief Client Officer, Outdoor Plus discussing where they think the future of media is headed in light of the rapid rise of digital consumption and smart devices continually getting smarter. The panel will be moderated by Verra Budimlija, the Chief Strategy Officer at MEC UK.

MEC UK and Thames21 launch new art installation to shine a light on the health of the Thames https://www.adforum.com/agency/3906/press-releases/63358/mec-uk-and-thames21-launch-new-art-installation-to-shine-a-light-on-the-health-of-the-thames https://www.adforum.com/agency/3906/press-releases/63358/mec-uk-and-thames21-launch-new-art-installation-to-shine-a-light-on-the-health-of-the-thames This Thursday, 16 March 2017), the Thames will host a new art installation created by acclaimed artist Jason Bruges to put a spotlight on the river’s health.

Called ‘Thames Pulse’, the installation, launched by London media agency MEC UK and the capital’s leading waterways charity Thames21, will reflect the river’s health, in real time, on the iconic Sea Containers building on the south bank.

MEC UK, which is based at Sea Containers, devised the lighting project to help raise awareness about the condition of the Thames and to support Thames21 in its mission of protecting it and other London rivers.

The charity engages the public around issues affecting London’s iconic river, including working with volunteers to remove litter. It also collects data about its health through its Thames River Watch project, supported by Tideway, the company delivering the super sewer in London, to tackle sewage pollution in the river.

MEC enlisted Jason Bruges Studio to create a dynamic artwork for the façade that represents the water quality. Data from the Thames will be read daily to monitor the condition of the river in central London and this will inform visualisations displayed on an array of lights on the river-facing façade.

The artwork will display one of three patterns based on whether the water quality is good, average or poor compared to the previous day’s data reading. Water quality updates will be posted on a regular Twitter Feed @ThamesPulse along with calls to action to join the Thames21 volunteering projects, driving people to a specially created landing page at http://www.thames21.org.uk/pulse.

The Thames Pulse project aims to highlight Thames21’s work and to encourage Londoners to sign up for voluntary activity to help improve the river, such as taking part in a Thames21 Clean Up or becoming a citizen scientist with the Thames River Watch programme.

The goal is also to help people understand how they can help improve the Thames’ health in their daily lives: everything from not pouring detergents and other pollutants into rainwater drains in the road, to disposing of plastic water bottles and other packaging responsibly.

This has been captured in a ten-point Thames Pulse Manifesto, which will be issued across social media as well as a PR campaign to help Londoners understand what they can do to help the river. A media campaign will also be deployed to raise awareness of the project.

The lights are being switched on at a high profile event at Mondrian London at Sea Containers on 16th March at 6.30pm.

Verra Budimlija, Chief Strategy Officer, MEC UK, said: “The Thames is the lifeblood of our city, but often we don’t celebrate it. We want to help Londoners understand more about their wonderful river’s health and take action. By taking the complex data that exists in the river and transforming into a beautiful artistic visualisation, we can help Londoners reconnect with The Thames and be excited by it.”

Jason Bruges, Founder and Creative Director of Jason Bruges Studio, said: “The data we take from the Thames tells a vital story of the life in the river, and Sea Containers is the perfect site-specific canvas on which to illustrate that story. We are delighted to be working with such innovative partners on this project, and to have the opportunity to create an installation so relevant to the river and those who interact with it. “

Debbie Leach, Chief Executive of Thames21, said: “There are many misunderstandings and conflicting messages about the health of the River Thames. Our Thames River Watch project gives ordinary Londoners the opportunity to investigate these issues for themselves. We are delighted to be working with MEC UK on the Thames Pulse. We are unlocking the mystery of how clean the Thames is and the challenges it faces on a daily basis. We’d love more Londoners to join us.”

The idea was conceived at MEC UK by Verra Budimlija, Chief Strategy Officer and Richard Martin, Strategy Director. They were supported by John Clarvis, Creative Technologist, Comms Directors Anna Millard, Elizabeth Robinson and Ben Levy; Strategy Director Mike Rance and Content Director, Monica Riley.
