Marcus Thomas launches holiday campaign to nurture the creative genius that children possess

It’s no secret that kids don’t get enough time to be creative these days. Their “free” time is highly scheduled.  On average, they spend 1,200 hours a year in front of screens. In fact, a NASA study found that while 98% of preschoolers scored as “creative geniuses,” by the time they were in middle school, that percentage dropped to 12%.

Independent creative agency Marcus Thomas decided to take action by collecting empty boxes and decorating them with simple visual messages encouraging parents to let their kids unlock their creativity. While porch pirates were busy stealing packages off porches, the agency was busy dropping off boxes in 80+ Cleveland communities.

“We see a plain cardboard box. But our kids see a UFO, a speedy race car, or maybe even a flying pirate ship. Kids can turn anything into an adventure with just a bit of imagination. And that’s the magic we tapped into to counter the not-so-great effects of too much screen time and overly structured play that our kids are dealing with today,” said Marcus Thomas Partner/Chief Creative Officer Jamie Venorsky.

The agency made and delivered boxes of various shapes and sizes encouraging kids to unlock their creativity. Once parents capture and socially share their kids’ creations with the #letssaveplay hashtag, a $5 donation will be made to The Emily Cooper Welty Expressive Therapy Center at Akron Children’s Hospital which provides holistic healing through creative arts.

“Seeing kids of all ages unleash their imagination was awe-inspiring,” add Venorsky. “Together the team at Marcus Thomas is sparking creativity and helping kids in need to some cheer this holiday season.”
