| Brief | No Frills, Canada’s leading discount grocery retailer, is a brand built on that feeling you get when you beat the system. “Haulers” have become part of the national zeitgeist and the brand has consistently challenged how a grocery store should behave.We launched the first video game about grocery shopping, and then levelled it up to be compatible with the first controller made of bananas.A retro, frill-less, 8-bit side-scrolling throwback, “Aisles of Glory: Legends of the Haul” merged IRL and IVL worlds. Players collected points by dodging frills, collecting hauls and completing boss levels. Points could then be redeemed in-store for free groceries. Acting like a video game publisher rather than a grocery store, we created our own limited-edition video game controller – the Frill Blaster Pro. Using produce you’d find in-store and capacitive touch technology, bananas became buttons to jump, run and dodge with.Named one of AdAge’s Top 5 Creative Campaigns and endorsed by execs at Xbox and Epic Games, the game got almost 800,000 plays and over 57 million impressions. |
