Leading production company Epoch Films has signed award-winning director Michael Lawrence for representation in the US. Michael was recently shortlisted for the prestigious Shots “New Director Of The Year” Award, singled out for his ability to emotionally grip viewers using an artful perspective that is uniquely his own.
The Buffalo, New York native came to Los Angeles by way of Indonesia, where he worked as a photographer focusing on gender rights and social causes in addition to cultivating his skills as a cinematographer. After relocating to California, Michael transitioned to directing full-time, creating music videos for critically acclaimed outfits like Wiseblood, Dirty Beaches and Porcelain Raft.
Michael’s photographer's eye and passion for telling lesser-known stories has given rise to a crafted visual style that keenly places the viewer in the emotional position of his subjects. "Bringing meaningful storytelling to the screen, creating work that moves people is always my goal,” he remarks. "The ability to make people respond to emotion always results in admirable work.”
He continues, “Working feeds me – it has always been my means to understanding the world. In post-tsunami Indonesia, it was the only way I could cope with the horrifying things I was seeing. I always try to find beauty, even in the most trying scenarios."
Michael’s “Supernatural” spot for Mizuno engages on a level that is completely holistic by weaving high-energy flashes of breathtaking natural landscapes with footage of a superhuman runner in training. His CIBC campaign “In Her Shoes” follows a woman's battle with breast cancer by using the camera from a first person perspective. Through her eyes, viewers experience the full arc of her story, from diagnosis through cancer treatment. The result is shockingly intimate, rife with emotion and prohibitive of passive viewing.
Michael has worked extensively in the US, Europe and Canada, building a portfolio that includes commercials for brands such as ESPN, Nike, Google, Twitter, Dewars, Scion and New Era. This work has earned Michael recognition and awards from the ADCC, Applied Arts, Bessies and Communication Arts, among others.
Michael Lawrence is welcomed to the Epoch roster by founder Mindy Goldberg, along with Executive Producers Melissa Culligan and Youree Henley. The company has offices in Los Angeles and New York
