I was a copywriter and got tired of director's messing up my great scripts.
What is most challenging about what you do?
Finding the right cast. we have a very limited pool of actors in south africa.
What is most rewarding?
Seeing your vision come together in the edit.
What’s a typical work week like?
If it's a pre-prod week I'm thinking about how I can improve the shoot. If it's a shooting week, I'm thinking about how i can improve the shoot. If it's a post week I'm thinking about how I could have improved the shoot.
What needs to happen the most in order for a shoot to run smoothly?
For me, it's all about the cast. If I have the best possible cast then I know everything will be okay.
Whats your best job/worst job?
My best job is telling an emotional story, something with a backbone. Something that moves the audience. If I'm shooting, there is no worst job.
What advice would you offer someone considering a career as a Director?
Directing commercials is a job. You're not creating art. So be prepared to compromise - to a point. Be prepared for a million opinions. Be prepared for creatives to tell you how to do your job. Take it all on board with a big heart and a smile. Just never ever lose your vision.
If you had one project that you could post on AdForum to represent your work, what would it be?
My commercial for Orange Babies.
Finally tell us something that most people don’t know about being a Director?
It's the most fun you can have with your clothes on.
