Story The Festival of Animation Berlin annually presents the best of recent national and international animated films, focusing on artistic shorts across all styles of animation. To advertise this year’s edition, happening on the 9th to the 11th of October 2020, the festival appointed Innocean Berlin as their creative agency. And their debut campaign couldn’t be more, let’s say, Berlin. In its first campaign for FAB, the agency decided to embrace the eccentricity of the city. Over the years, Berlin has become known for its unusual stories. Just last month, a nudist Berliner chasing a wild boar made headlines all over the world. With this in mind, Innocean had the insight: “In Berlin, only animation beats reality.”. The agency spread the concept in various directions, starting with a series of animations based on true Berlin stories, such as the woman who officially married the Berlin Wall, a pony riding the S-Bahn and, of course, the nudist chasing the wild boar. These films will be shown on the Berliner Fenster (media screens inside the Berlin underground trains) and online media. To find more true, yet weird Berlin stories, Innocean went to the one place that has surely witnessed lots of them: the Späti - a sort of typical Berliner convenience store, originally from East Berlin. Today they can be found on almost every street corner and open 24/7 (even during lockdown). It’s where Berliners buy their groceries, but also where they go pre and post party, making the Spätis a core part of the city's culture. The agency teamed up with three extremely "hood" Spätis and brought to life their craziest true stories in a series of mini-docs. Their owners became FAB ambassadors, inspiring stickers using classic Späti phrases (“2 euro bitte.”, “Hast du einen offner?”) and were also invited to be exclusive jury members of the Späti Award - for the best Berliner animation according to them, naturally. FAB and Innocean Berlin also collaborated with Fritz-Kola to develop a special edition bottle available only at their collaborating Spätis and the festival. "We're extremely excited to kick off this partnership with FAB and help them become the "Berlinale" of animation. For our first campaign we didn't have to look far for inspiration - the streets of Berlin speak for themselves. They're a birthplace of crazy, often surreal stuff. Still, there's only one thing that can beat them: animation. So that's what we went for." Ricardo Wolff, Executive Creative Director Along with the Späti stories, the agency developed a poster campaign in which they invited illustrators to share their own vision of “In Berlin, only animation beats reality.”. These posters resulted in a series of vibrant, colourful prints spread across Berlin’s most creative areas and train stations.
