|Philosophy|| The Levi's® Print Workshop in Berlin focuses on one specific aspect of the printmaking tradition: Silk Screen Printing. Screen printing is a traditional printing technique that has been used by artists, revolutionaries, nuns, politicians and other pioneers for centuries. The technique involves using screens made from a porous woven mesh, which are stretched over wooden frames. Parts of the mesh are covered using non-porous stencil-like forms. Using a roller, ink or other printable materials are pushed through the non-covered part of the mesh onto the printing surface (generally textile or paper), which is situated below the frame. The ink appears on the non-covered spaces and creates an image replicating the stencil shape. |
The Levi’s® Print Workshop is equipped with top-of-the-line screen printing tools and supplies including manual and automatic machines, computer workstations, environmentally friendly inks, premium papers in various sizes, and various other items to print on and with. The printing machines are state-of-the-art and built by Rainer Schnell, who also supplies all of the ink. Sustainability is a key component in Rainer Schnell’s approach. Every station is made to use as little energy, and few resources as possible, while never sacrificing quality. Staff composed of experienced screen printers from the Berlin community are on hand to provide creative and technical support every day.
