Story | For winter, Nando’s (a South African flame-grilled peri peri chicken franchise) decided to add two new meals to their menu. The brief to our Agency was to promote the variety Nando’s has to offer. We realized that variety can be interpreted as diversity, especially in a South African context. In true Nando’s fashion, we used social commentary to highlight the diversity that exists in our country and also tackle the intolerance of some South Africans towards foreigners. Apart from selling chicken, we wanted to raise awareness of xenophobia. The ad’s message is clearly anti-xenophobic but after only 5 days on air, all the broadcasters decided to pull the ad off their stations. Please note: The advert was never banned by the Advertising Standards Authority. |
