Philosophy | Kanazawa high school sumo wrestling tournament is the oldest amateur sports tournament in japan, with its history of over 100 years. 2017 was the year of its 101st tournament. To mark its start for the next 100 years and to convey the fun of sumo to young generations who think sumo is old-fashioned and uncool, we created “sumo girls”. Under the concept of “the more we know the rules, the more we can enjoy the sports”, the prints show 2 high school girls performing all of sumo’s 82 winning techniques. “sumo girls” changed the image of sumo from rough and old-fashioned to cool and sophisticated. Since the prints illustrate the beauty and accuracy of sumo’s techniques to a high extent, it also became an unprecedentedly valuable material to learn sumo’s techniques." |
