Great F**king Blades

Savvy advertising has generated a base of 200,000 subscribers and should help the “Dollar Shave Club” exceed $10 million in revenue this year.

The dollar shave club represents the branding philosophy adopted by many hugely successful companies across many different markets.

Until fairly recently, brands seem to spend their time and huge sums of money trying to be everything to everybody. They would cover every social media channel and market to every niche. They would try to produce products that could sell to smaller and smaller market segments.

Nowadays more companies are reaping the rewards of a more simplistic approach. By making good judgment calls on what channel, service and product investments these companies can grow faster and inspire more loyalty.

This fundamentally comes down to choice. Clearly, choice can have a negative relationship with profitable consumer behaviour. The more choice divulged to the consumer, the less likely they are to be loyal.

Dollar shave club combats this directly. It presents serene simplicity and takes any real decision making out of the equation “A great shave for a few bucks a month”. Its created innovative territory in the world of shaving products – delivering them straight to your house on a monthly basis.

In a world cluttered by screaming brands trying to influence our decision making through every minute of the day, the brands that make this as simple as possible seem to be doing the best. Apple is a prime example of this. Its customer and user experience from start to finish centres on simplicity and therefore abstracts itself from any messaging confusion.

Netflix lead the charge within online TV industry. In one fell swoop they seem to have dispelled a huge chunk of piracy on the web. They presented an affordable solution for online TV. It gathers all you favourite shows and movies into place using an incredibly simplistic but enjoyable user experience.

Customers sometimes don’t want to make the decisions. Brands can do it for them.
