Spotlight on ‘Excellence with Impact’ video series

Universities are increasingly eager to showcase the impact their research is having, and video is a great way to get these stories across in an accessible way.

Earlier this year, Spectrecom Films teamed up with one of our long-term clients, the University of Sussex, to create four new case study videos that highlight the real-world impact of research undertaken by its academics.

The series has been very well received by Sussex. Saskia Gent, the university’s REF Impact Officer, noted that “the Vice-Chancellor mentioned them in glowing terms in one of his staff open meetings, and they were ‘premiered’ at an event for internal and external stakeholders and also went down very well there.”

Let’s take a look at the videos…

‘The Ethics of Organ Donation’ details the work of Professor Bobbie Farsides and how that work was cited as a major factor in increasing UK organ donor rates by 50%.

Professor Mariana Mazzucato’s story is entitled ‘How Governments Drive Innovation’. Featuring contributions from MPs Chi Onwurah and former Universities Minister David Willetts, the video demonstrates how influential her theories on state-driven innovation have been on policy-makers.

‘Mathematical Modelling for Control of Meningitis’ follows Dr Konstantin Blyuss, detailing how his computer models have helped influence the treatment of meningococcal meningitis in Sub-Saharan Africa, a disease responsible for tens of thousands of deaths.

And last by not least, the ‘Enriching Public Appreciation of Sound’ video features Professor David Hendy and offers a fascinating examination of something we all pay far too little attention to: noise. The video covers how David explored noise through his own Radio 4 series, leading to acclaim from artist Jeremy Deller and establishment of a permanent collection of sound at the British Library.

If you’re eager to use video to tell your university’s story, get in touch with Kathy or Oliver, our account managers for universities. Both have years of experience working within HE marketing and communications, and are passionate about producing fantastic content on behalf of our university clients.
