Tooled Up: Saskia Pomeroy, Toolbox

Saskia Pomeroy is a powerhouse of creativity. When she isn't producing her wonderful artwork and prints, she is curating events, such as the brilliant Unit-D, or collaborating on clothing with the likes of PAOM.

We were first made aware of Saskia's work through her involvement in Peckham Print Studios Boxpark Pop-up a few years ago and have been keenly following her varied output ever since. Supplied with an old wooden toolbox to transform Saskia applied her characteristic blend of colour and modernist pattern to all of the surfaces of the vessel. In turn creating a surprising and engaging artwork in it's own right.

"The tool has many sides and faces, and I wanted to do pattern, so I decided I wanted to use each face on the box for a different colour or pattern. I think I just went crazy! I have drawn inspiration from Memphis style patterns used in combination with gradients and bright patterns found in nature."

Saskia's own event Unit-D is running until the 21st Sept and is definitely a highlight of LDF. A unique shop and restaurant, Unit-D is a celebration of local craft artists, food culture and graphic arts. Showcasing a range of unique and exciting homeware projects from the likes of Sean Roy Parker and London Terrariums, they are also serving up great food in the pop up restaurant. There are still tickets available for the final night of food with Martys Creole Night, a Louisiana inspired taste of the Bayou, which looks set to be particularly yummy.

Saskia Pomeroy graduated from Glasgow School of art in 2007. Saskia Pomeroy lives and works in London as a visual artist and freelance designer. Saskia has also worked as a commercial screen printer at established print house K2 screen.

Saskia is a multidisciplinary artist working within print, drawing, painting, sculpture and textiles. Saskia’s work explores the relationships within compositions of colour, texture and shapes. Sometimes abstract, sometimes observational. Her work is bright and colourful and always joyful. Saskia’s time as a screen printer has directly informed her printing style. She frequently uses contrasting ink finishes, colour overlays and technical detail as an additional dimension to her print work. This is also true of her painting work although more illustrative, is often an abstraction of real forms and themes such as nature, ancient art, glyphs and symbols.
