Story | The reason for this campaign was to protest against the political decisions that are putting refugees’ lives at risk because of the use of fences and checkpoints: decisions such as the one made by Spain, which in March 2015 approved a text that legalised the "on the spot" deportations of migrants and refugees that the Civil Guard has been carrying out in Ceuta and Melilla; or in Hungary, which in September 2015 set up transit zones on its border with Serbia to return asylum-seekers after minimal procedures with questionable safeguards. In total, EU member states have built more than 235 km of fences along the EU’s external borders. |
