| Story | This is not fiction. This is happening today in El Salvador. Every year, thousands of women and girls are denied their human rights by El Salvador’s total ban on abortion. The Salvadoran government is ultimately responsible for the resulting deaths of women and girls, and for the thousands whose human rights have been violated by the ban. El Salvador is coming under under pressure to amend its repressive and out-dated abortion laws. The effects of these laws amount to institutionalized violence, torture and other forms of ill-treatment against women and girls. El Salvador’s restrictive laws mean women and girls found guilty of having an abortion face between two to eight years in jail. Medical practitioners face prison sentences of up to 12 years if found to be providing access to abortion services. Short animated video produced by Amnesty International which features the story of a young woman of 17, Gloria who experiences a miscarriage. She is taken to hospital where she is arrested and handcuffed to her hospital bed. The doctor who treated her called the police. The police accuse her of deliberately killing her unborn child. She faces trial and is sentenced to 30 years in prison for aggravated homicide. |
| Philosophy | To contribute to ending the total ban on abortion in El Salvador we came up with an animation that would tell the story of a typical situation a woman could face in El Salvador. We wanted an adult feel to the animation as our target audience was an 18+ audience. |
| Problem | Women who have been affected by this issue in El Salvador are generally scared of speaking out publicly. An animated film avoided the need for any women to appear directly. |
| Result | This video was used on facebook, youtube, and other social media platforms and highlights the tragic consequences of legislation around sexual and reproductive rights and maternal health, often dictated by religion and the catastrophic affect this can result in. |
