Story There are lots of annoying things about being pregnant; from swollen feet and cankles, to people touching your bump, to needing to pee all the time. However, in Ireland, being pregnant it not just annoying. It can be life threatening.
This film is part of a continuing campaign from Amnesty International to Repeal the 8th Amendment of the Irish constitution. The 8th Amendment explicitly acknowledges the equal right to life of the mother and the unborn child. This effectively introduces a constitutional ban on abortion in Ireland and creates an unworkable distinction between a pregnant woman’s life and her health. Thus, any woman who wants or needs to terminate a pregnancy (including women carrying nonviable pregnancies or fatal foetal abnormalities) has no option but to carry the baby to term or break the law. As a result, it is estimated that over 4,000 women and girls travel to Britain in order to terminate pregnancies every year.

However, the 8th Amendment is about more than abortion rights. It is about Irish women’s fundamental human right to bodily integrity and self-determination. The UN Human Rights Committee found in 2016 that the 8th Amendment constitutes discrimination against women on grounds of sex, and denies them equal protection of the law. Thousands of women every year are affected by it in ways they do not anticipate or know about before they become pregnant. And yet, the majority of Ireland’s population still do not believe it affects them.
